Wash-N-Go’s can be helpful for anyone with a busy schedule, or who has things on their list that are urgent.
But there are downsides to Wash-N-Go’s; breakage, dryness, and tangles.
WHAT IS A WASH-N-GO
A Wash-N-Go is when you shampoo your hair or wash it with conditioner, putting in products of your choice, and then leaving it in its natural state. No need for brushing, detangling, or styling; just leave the house with your hair wet with product and let it air dry.
Tips for Wash-N-Go
Remember Wash-N-Go’s are supposed to be minimal, don’t make it hard on yourself. Wash-n-go’s can consist of just water and conditioner, no shampoo or masks. Just refreshing our hair!
Don’t style, let it be free.
Use the LOC method if it works for you. I just condition and oil my ends, but everyone has different hair.
If you are planning to use the wash-n-go as your main style, remember to take time out every 1-3 months to spend time detangling it and putting it up to stretch. I call it “Keeping hair in check”. Also, I like to have my length show once in a while!
Detangle as needed! Even if you’re not using wash-n-go frequently, it will lead to more tangles than protective styles.
You will notice that when you long-term wash-n-go your hair it will feel like it has breakage, and it will, but it may seem worse than it is. Having your hair constantly in a Wash-N-Go state keeps your hair dense and thick to the point where the dead hair just hangs in there and doesn’t leave, so you find it when you touch your hair.
Condition, oil, and wet your hair every day- this is a rule. Do not break it.
Depending on the length and what your hair tells you, and the weather, you may want to water/wet your hair multiple times a day. Water is your BFF. In most cases you need to water your hair all the time but when you are Wash-N-Going that baby just dries up like no tomorrow. Water your hair to the best of your ability.
Cons
Breakage: Wash-N-Go creates a lot of breakages because your ends are constantly being exposed to a ton of things, from sun to Fabrics. The best I’ve come up with is to bandanna it, by which I mean wrap a bandana around it as seen here by miss Fernanda Chaves. It’ll minimize some damage but the ends are still at risk. Go watch her video for more ways to style it.
Finding the right amount of product to use: If you are using thick oils on a hot day that gurl is going to be running. If you try using light oils, say bye-bye it’ll dry up or be absorbed to non-existence, same with conditioner. I use creams when wash-n-going, though that may not work for everyone. I even make my own when I don’t have the time or money to buy all those non-black-owned products.
Very simple, I’ll post a tutorial on how I make it. It’s super easy, you’ll be looking at me crazy.
Conclusion
Do what makes you comfortable, always keep listening to your hair. Wash-n-go’s can be very simple and fun but there are downsides too. Good Luck!
